Torna Fort (also called Prachandagad — "Fierce Fort") stands at 4,603 ft (1,403 m) in Velhe taluka, Pune district, Maharashtra — 60 km southwest of Pune. Captured by 15-year-old Shivaji Maharaj in 1646 — his first fort conquest marking the beginning of the Maratha Empire — Torna is historically the birthplace of the Swaraj movement and remains the highest and most challenging major trek in the Pune Sahyadri range.

A Glimpse into History of Torna Fort
Shivaji's First Conquest (1646)
In 1646, 15-year-old Shivaji Bhosale — accompanied by his Mavali (local hill tribe) companions — captured Torna Fort from the Bijapur Sultanate. This was his first independent military act, predating his father Shahji's approval. The conquest marked the formal beginning of Hindavi Swaraj (independent Hindu rule). Shivaji renamed it "Prachandagad" (Fierce Fort) and used treasure found on the fort to begin construction of Rajgad Fort nearby.
Strategic Mountain Stronghold
At 4,603 ft, Torna was strategically impregnable — its vertiginous approach routes could be defended by a handful of soldiers against a large army. The fort's Menghai Devi temple, Budhla Machi plateau, and massive stone cisterns made it self-sufficient for extended sieges. It formed the anchor of Shivaji's southwestern Sahyadri fort network along with Rajgad (8 km) and Sinhagad (35 km).
Later History & British Capture
Torna remained in Maratha hands through most of the Peshwa period. In 1818, following the Third Anglo-Maratha War, British forces captured Torna without resistance — the last Maratha garrison had already withdrawn. Archaeological Survey of India has since protected the fort, which contains the original Menghai Devi temple, ancient cisterns, and two magnificent gateways in surprisingly good repair.
Historical & Trekking Significance
Torna Fort is the birthplace of the Maratha Empire — no other site in Maharashtra carries this pivotal historical weight. Its 4,603 ft summit offers views of Rajgad (8 km), Sinhagad (35 km), and the Sahyadri ranges extending to Karnataka. The demanding 3.5-hour ascent via twin peaks — Budhla Machi and Zunjar Machi — makes Torna the most challenging and rewarding full-day trek from Pune.
Events & Celebrations
Shivaji's First Fort Anniversary (April/May)
Local Shiv Premi organisations conduct an annual "Swaraj Din" event at Torna marking the anniversary of Shivaji's first conquest. Hundreds of trekkers climb to the summit for a dawn flag hoisting ceremony at the Menghai Devi temple. In recent years, torch-lit night climbs on the eve of the anniversary have attracted 500+ trekkers making Torna one of Maharashtra's most meaningful heritage treks.
Monsoon Waterfall Trek Season
July–September brings dozens of seasonal waterfalls cascading down Torna's rock face, making the trail visually spectacular. Monsoon clouds envelop the summit at 4,600 ft creating a dramatic above-the-clouds experience on the Budhla Machi plateau. Trek operators from Pune offer guided group treks every weekend during monsoon — the most popular being the combined Torna-Rajgad two-day ridge crossing.
Did You Know?
The treasure Shivaji found inside Torna Fort in 1646 — gold coins hidden by previous Bijapur Sultanate garrison commanders — directly funded the construction of Rajgad Fort (8 km away). Historians estimate the treasure was worth the equivalent of ₹15–20 crore in modern value. Without this unexpected windfall financing, Rajgad — Shivaji's capital for 25 years — might never have been built in its ambitious form.
